Genetic test to determine the bioavailability of free vitamin D
Vitamin D has a multitude of essential biological functions, but up to 90% of vitamin D is bound to the vitamin D binding protein (VDBP) being responsible for its transportation. Only less than 1% of the vitamin D is freely available and, thus, biologically active. freeVITAMINDgen investigates SNPs within the VDBP gene that are associated with a different affinity to vitamin D metabolites. freeVITAMINDgen therefore allows the identification of a potential deficiency of bioavailable vitamin D and accordingly, an adaptation of vitamin D supplementation.
